Downhill

The event was held on February 13, 1998 in Happo One, Hakuba. It was repeatedly postponed; run 5 days after originally scheduled. Temperatures approached 60°F (16 °C) at the finish by mid-race. All three medalists were among the first ten racers on the course. Fifteen of the 43 racers failed to finish, most notably pre-race favorite Hermann Maier of Austria. He started fourth, but flew spectacularly off the upper part of the course, gaining worldwide coverage. (Youtube Video). It was Jean-Luc Crétier's only career win in international competition.
